Understand the systems

Game mechanics explained.

Mechanics are the rules and interactions that turn an idea into something a player can understand, practise and influence.

Core building blocks

Goals

A goal gives direction: reach a destination, solve a puzzle, build a system, cooperate with a team or improve a score. Strong goals are understandable even when achieving them is difficult.

Rules and actions

Rules define what can happen. Actions are what the player can do within those rules. Depth often comes from a small set of actions that interact in interesting ways rather than a large number of disconnected controls.

Feedback

Visual, audio and tactile feedback helps a player connect an action with its result. Clear feedback supports learning; confusing feedback can make failure feel arbitrary.

Gameplay loops

A gameplay loop is a repeated sequence of action, result and adjustment. A puzzle loop might be observe, test and revise. A strategy loop might be plan, commit resources, observe the outcome and adapt.

Healthy design check: A loop should not rely on pressure, hidden costs or endless urgency to keep someone engaged.

Progression, difficulty and rewards

Progression can unlock new options, raise difficulty or make prior learning visible. Rewards may be functional, cosmetic, narrative or social. Random rewards add uncertainty but can also obscure value—especially when connected to spending.

Common design elements and useful questions

DifficultyAdjusts challengeCan it be changed without penalty?
ProgressionShows developmentDoes progress depend mainly on skill, time or spending?
RandomnessAdds uncertaintyAre probabilities and costs clear?
Social systemsConnects playersAre privacy, blocking and reporting controls available?
RewardsReinforces actionsDoes the reward support enjoyment or create pressure?

How to evaluate a mechanic

  • Can a new player understand the rule and its consequences?
  • Does skill or informed choice meaningfully affect the result?
  • Are time and monetary costs visible before commitment?
  • Can the player pause or stop without losing essential progress?
  • Does the system respect accessibility and different skill levels?
